NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore guard
Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored 12 of his team high 19 points in the second half to lead four Owls in double figures, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was edged by Felician College by a score of 75-74 on a last second jumper from Devon Young. The Owls now sit at 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the Northeast-10, while the Golden Falcons improved to 5-5 overall.
In the first half, the Owls were led offensively by senior forward Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.), who netted all of his 11 points in the opening frame. Felician got 13 from Young, and led by as many as seven, as they entered the intermission with a six point lead, 40-34.
Neither team established an advantage in the opening minutes of the second half until a
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) three-pointer with 7:04 remaining gave the Owls a lead that they would hold until the closing seconds. After two missed free throws with nine seconds remaining and the Owls leading 74-73, Kashiff Foster launched a long jumper that missed off the back of the rim. The long rebound landed in the hands of Young, who connected on a jump shot with 0.4 seconds remaining. A full court heave from Harris kept both teams in suspense, but it ultimately struck the back iron and bounced out as time expired.
Junior guard Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) and senior forward Devon Sullivan (Jamaica, N.Y.) each added ten points for the Owls. McNeill and sophomore center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) led the rebounding effort with six apiece. Mazzarella also netted a career high eight points and five blocked shots. Gardenhire dished out a career high seven assists to lead the Owls in that category. Junior forward
Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored nine points off the bench, Mazzarella added eight and Corbett chipped in with seven to round out the SCSU offense. Felician's Young led all scorers with 28 points.
The Owls return to the court on Friday, Dec. 28 as they host Dominican College in a non-conference game. The action tips off from Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven at 7 p.m.
