SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 16 of his team high 18 points in the second half, and senior forward Devon Sullivan (Jamaica, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and a game high 13 rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was unable to overcome an early run as they fell to American International by a score of 79-61 on Saturday afternoon from Butova Gymnasium in Springfield, Mass. The Owls fell to 1-6 overall and 0-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 23-4 run over the first 10:16, paced by nine points from sophomore forward Ryan Leak. The Owls fought back with a 14-4 run of their own over the next 7:16, as the half concluded with the Owls trailing by a score of 33-21. Sullivan and junior guard
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) each scored seven points to lead the Owls offense in the opening half. Sullivan also pulled down nine rebounds, including three on the offensive end. Leak entered the intermission leading all scorers with 15 points.
In the second half, American International came out firing once again, opening the period on a 12-2 run over the opening 3:32, propelled by two three pointers apiece from Leak and Colson Senat. The Owls made a final push with a 13-2 run in the middle of the second half, but the Owls never got closer than 11 points to the Yellow Jackets, who took the victory by a 79-61 margin.
Sophomore guard
Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points along to accompany his team high of four assists. Corbett added nine points off the bench, and junior guard
Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) chipped in eight points.
American International's Ryan Leak led all scorers with 23 points on an 8-for-12 shooting day, including shooting 3-for-6 from behind the arc.
The Owls' schedule resumes on Friday, Dec. 14, as they return home to New Haven to challenge No. 25 Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 contest. The action tips off from James W. Moore Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
