NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior
Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) and junior
Kierstin Pry (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded a double-double each as the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated Bloomfield (30-18, 25-30, 19-30, 33-31, 24-22) and Molloy (30-26, 30-25, 30-21) in tri-match action at Pelz Gymnasium on Monday night.
In the first match, SCSU capitalized on 12 kills and 17 digs by Pry, as well as 18 kills and 24 digs by Mendizabal to rally from a two-games-to-one deficit and win in the decisive fifth game. Junior
Ashley Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) chipped in with 21 assists, while sophomore
Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.) tallied 11 assists and a match-high four service aces. Sophomore
Tara Bregensir (Coal Township, Pa.) led the way defensively for SCSU with three solo blocks and two block assists. Bloomfield's Sonia Perez dished out a match-high 34 assists and Brittany DeVries compiled a match-high 26 digs in defeat.
In their second match of the day, Pry once again led the way with a match-high nine kills to go with 12 digs as SCSU defeated Molloy in three games. Coombs duplicated her output from the first match, registering another 21 assists to record a match-high. Chase came up just shy of a double-double in the nightcap, as she dished out 17 assists and picked up seven digs. Monika Rodziewicz picked up 30 digs for Molloy in the losing effort, while Danielle Sekesan led Molloy with 11 assists.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, August 28 when they travel to St. Michael's for their first Northeast-10 Conference game. Scheduled start time is 6 p.m. in Colchester, Vt.
