NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut volleyball swept Southern New Hampshire, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in NE10 action in Pelz Gym. The Owls improved to an overall record of 14-5 an an NE10 record of 5-1.
Kerrigan Habing led the Owls with 10 kills, as
Sydney Bennett added nine and
Aleciyah Brodley had a career-best of seven kills.
Emily Sartell totaled a career-best of four service aces,
Dylan Marney had three aces, and Mitchell added an ace.
Sarah Henault and
Kimi Mitchell had a team-best of nine digs, as
Dylan Marney had seven digs. Mitchell had a team-best of 26 assists, while Habing and Henault both had four. Bennett recorded a team-best of three blocks, as
Elena Bianchi and
Jaiden Binning had a block against the Penmen.
In the first set, early on, both teams went back and forth with one another. A series of kills from
Kimi Mitchell and
Ceci Carter and a service ace by Mitchell, helped extend the lead for the Owls, 15-8. Their momentum only grew from there as
Dylan Marney recorded back-to-back aces, kills came from Bennett, Mitchell and Carter, as Southern Connecticut finished the set, 25-12.
In the second set, after a close, 6-6 tie in the beginning, the Owls attack was sparked by a kill from Mitchell and back-to-back kills from
Aleciyah Brodley, to take a 13-7 advantage. After that, Southern Connecticut continued to put points on the board, due to kills from
Jasmine Stroud,
Kerrigan Habing and
Jaiden Binning. Southern New Hampshire looked to make a comeback; however, a kill from Brodley, assisted by Mitchell and a service ace from
Emily Sartell, helped the Owls get the second set victory, 25-14.
In the third set, the Owls worked to a 9-5 lead, after a kill by
Sydney Bennett and an attack error from the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire stayed with Southern Connecticut for in the set; nevertheless, the Owls added to their lead, due to kills from Brodley, Bianchi and Habing, to win the third set, 25-18 and to clinch a 3-0 victory over the Penmen.
The Owls will return to action on Nov. 7 at 6:00 pm in an NE10 matchup against American International in Springfield, Mass. Southern will return home to Pelz Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in an NE10 matchup against Adelphi at 5:00 pm.
