NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Redshirt sophomore tailback
Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) rushed for a career-high 149 yards and scored three touchdowns, but the Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Central Connecticut State University on Saturday evening, 56-34.
The Owls are now 2-1 on the season. It was the final non-conference game of the regular season for SCSU, who now plays eight Northeast-10 contests the rest of the way. CCSU improved to 2-1 with the victory.
SCSU took the opening kickoff and put together a 10 play, 80-yard drive that culminated on a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Steve Armstrong (Nutley, N.J.) to
Jonathan Lee (Norwalk, Conn.).
The Blue Devils then scored the next two touchdowns of the contest to take a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.
The Owls answered with a six play, 67-yard drive that closed the gap. Freeman capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. However, the Owls missed the PAT, allowing the hosts to stay in front at 14-13.
CCSU scored the next four touchdowns of the game. The first three scores came in a span of 4:40 late in the opening half, which gave the Blue Devils a 35-13 lead at halftime. CCSU then returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to extend the advantage to 42-13.
SCSU rallied to put together a 15 play, 59-yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown pass from Armstrong to
Chris Bergeski (Mountainside, N.J.).
The Blue Devils countered with another touchdown to make the score 49-20.
However, SCSU then marched 87 yards in 10 plays to cut the deficit to 49-27. Freeman capped the drive with a one-yard plunge.
CCSU then added its final touchdown of the day before the Owls closed the scoring in the waning seconds.
SCSU went 66 yards in 12 plays, culminating in another one-yard touchdown run from Freeman.
Armstrong finished 23-of-32 for 247 yards. He threw two touchdowns and went interception.
Bergeski hauled in eight catches for 92 yards, while Lee had seven catches for 91 yards. #Ty Marshall (Ellington, Ga.)# also tallied seven receptions on the night.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. road contest at American International College.
