NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors
Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) and
Lauren Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) each posted a double-double on the afternoon, but the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team lost to American International and Concordia in tri-match action at Pelz Gymnasium on Saturday. In the middle match of the afternoon, Concordia defeated AIC. The afternoon leaves SCSU with a 6-8 (1-1 NE-10) record on the season. AIC now stands at 3-4 (1-2 NE-10) while Concordia is now 5-4 (0-0 ECC).
In the day's first match, American International defeated SCSU 3-1 (30-19, 30-25, 24-30, 30-27). Mendizabal posted a double-double for the Owls by racking up 10 kills and 11 digs. Junior
Maria Arenas (Stratford, Conn.) tied for the match-high with 14 digs. Sophomore
Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.) led the team with 22 assists. AIC posted three doubles in the first match of the afternoon. Alicia Cotton (11 kills and 11 digs), Charisse Trotman (17 kills and 13 digs) and Kambryn Williams (11 kills and 14 digs) turned the trick while Ozge Ozkan posted a match-high 38 assists.
In the second match of the afternoon, Concordia defeated AIC 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-27). Shannon Flaherty led the way for Concordia, as she recorded a double-double with 11 digs and a match-high 36 assists to go with four aces. Maddy Lorenz added a match-high 12 kills. For AIC, Ozge Ozkan posted a double-double in defeat with 21 assists and a match-high 12 digs.
In the final match of the day, SCSU took a 2-0 lead before falling 3-2 to Concordia (19-30, 23-30, 30-20, 30-18, 15-11). Junior Ashley and
Lauren Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) each posted a double-double in defeat for the Owls. Lauren registered 14 kills and 13 digs while Ashley dished out 19 assists and came up with 10 digs. Meanwhile, three players posted a double-double for Concordia. Shannon Flaherty recorded 16 digs and a match-high 48 assists. Tiffany Edwards amassed 15 kills and 12 digs while Maddy Lorenz garnered match highs with both 24 kills and 17 digs.
The Owls return to the court on Tuesday, September 18 when they travel to visit Mercy College. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dobbs Ferry H.S. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
