WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman forward
Mike Fraioli (Norwalk, Conn.) scored two goals and picked up an assist on Saturday afternoon to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 4-2 road victory over Bentley in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Bentley Soccer Complex. Jimmy Alexander scored twice for Bentley in the loss. The win pushes SCSU's record to 6-2-3 (5-1-2 NE-10) while Bentley falls to 3-7-1 (1-5-0 NE-10) with the loss.
SCSU would dominate the first half, as they scored three times and held an 11-5 shots advantage through the first 45 minutes. The Owls would open the scoring in the 20th minute when a pass from Fraioli sprung senior forward
Shane Ogilvie (Regina, Saskatchewan) up the middle for his fourth goal of the season. All of Ogilvie's tallies have come in the previous four games.
Later in the half, Fraioli would score twice in a span of 5:16 to give SCSU a 3-0 lead heading to halftime. First, in the 25th minute, Fraioli picked up his fourth goal of the season as he knocked home the rebound of a shot by junior midfielder
Tom Mattera (Norwalk, Conn.) which was initially saved by Bentley goalkeeper Derek DuBois. In the 31st minute Fraioli struck again when he lifted a ball over DuBois' head from the right side off an assist from Ogilvie.
Bentley would make things interesting when Alexander tallied a pair of goals only 32 seconds apart early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Alexander notched his fifth goal of the season as he made a run, took a Chris Lipsett pass on the left side and beat SCSU senior goalkeeper
Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.). In the 52nd minute, Alexander found the net again as he picked off an errant pass from the SCSU defense, dribbled past a defender and scored an unassisted goal.
Fraioli once again was front-and-center but did not factor in the scoring when the Owls picked up the goal to put the game away. In the 85th minute, Fraioli served a cross into the Bentley box and it was inadvertently knocked into the net by Falcon defender Josh Trubow for an own goal to give SCSU a 4-2 lead which they would hold the rest of the way.
Bentley outshot SCSU 12-8 in the second half, but the Owls held a slim 19-17 edge over the full 90 minutes.
Lawless made seven saves in net to earn the victory for SCSU while DuBois made four saves in front of the Bentley cage in defeat.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, October 2 when they travel to visit American International in a Northeast-10 Conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at AIC Park in Springfield, Mass.
