PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore
Marcia Hollingsworth (Alexandria, Va.) recorded 17 kills over the course of two matches on Saturday as the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team won one match and lost another to finish with a 1-2 record at a tournament hosted by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The Owls defeated Caldwell College 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-20) in their first action of the day and then dropped their final match of the tournament to USIP 3-2 (30-24, 30-32, 20-30, 30-25, 15-13). The split leaves SCSU with a 5-5 record on the season.
In the match against Caldwell, Hollingsworth and junior
Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) tallied nine kills each to tie them with Keesha Francois and Cory Roesing of Caldwell for the match-high. Mendizabal also figured in on a match-high five blocks (three solo). Junior
Ashley Coombs dished out 21 assists to match her season-high for SCSU and finished just four behind the match-high 25 assists by Caldwell's Kendra Kane. Junior
Maria Arenas (Stratford, Conn.) led the Owls with 15 digs, a figure which tied her for the match-high with Caldwell's Laura Ciesla.
In the match against USIP, Hollingsworth, junior
Tara Bregensir (Coal Township, Pa.) and junior Alianna Lannigan (Seldom, N.Y.) each posted eight kills to lead the Owls. Coombs once again posted a team-high with 16 assists, and sister
Heather Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Owls with 17 digs. Mendizabal was involved in a match-high 11 blocks (seven solo). USIP held the match-high totals in every other major statistical category, as Lindsey Wenderoth had 15 kills, Kayleen Piszczek dished out 50 assists and Claire Tauschek posted 30 digs.
The Owls return to the court on Monday, September 10 when they visit Post University. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
