NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) narrowly missed a double-double as she scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the No. 17 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State women's basketball team to a 57-33 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action at Moore Fieldhouse on Thursday night. Senior forward Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) led all scorers with 13 points, while Jacquelin Precious led Le Moyne with nine points. With the win, the Owls improve to 11-4 (7-3 NE-10) while Le Moyne falls to 7-7 (4-6 NE-10) with the loss.
SCSU wasted no time getting out of the gate, as they opened the game on a 14-4 run, including a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Michelle Martinik (Monroe, Conn.) over the opening 5:21 of action. After the Owls extended the lead to 14 points on a pair of Martinik free throws with 2:57 remaining in the period, Le Moyne put together a quick 8-0 run over the next 1:48, with all eight points coming from Precious, to close the gap to 29-23. Lynch notched the final bucket of the half to give SCSU a 31-23 lead heading into the intermission.
For SCSU, Lynch and Martinik shared the scoring lead with eight points each. Senior forward Rochelle Johnson (Norwalk, Conn.) and Johannes tied for the team lead with four rebounds apiece. Freshman guard

For Le Moyne, Precious led the way with eight points in the opening stanza. Courtney Coryea led all players with seven first half rebounds.
The second half was a defensive showcase, as the Owls held the Dolphins to just 10 points in the stanza, narrowly missing the NCAA Division II record for fewest points allowed in a half (seven). SCSU opened the half on a 21-2 run, as Le Moyne did not tally their initial field goal of the second half until the 3:53 mark. In all, Le Moyne went 17:16 without a bucket, dating back to the first half. Le Moyne would shoot 3-for-24 from the floor in the second half as the Owls outscored the Dolphins 26-10 in the period and went on to win by a score of 57-33.
For SCSU, Johannes narrowly missed her first career double-double as she scored eight points and hauled in a career and game-best 10 rebounds. Lynch led all scorers on the evening with 13 points on 5-for-15 shooting. Johnson also tallied double digits with 12 points to match her career high. Johnson, Lentz and junior guard Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) each snagged six rebounds for SCSU. Lentz handed out a game-high seven assists and matched her career high with six rebounds.
For Le Moyne, Precious led the way with nine points as the Dolphins failed to have a scorer tally double digits. Coryea led Le Moyne with eight rebounds while Brandy Wangelin added seven rebounds of her own.
SCSU shot 21-for-64 (32.8%) from the floor, 6-for-23 (26.1%) from three-point range and 9-for-15 (60.0%) from the free-throw line on the evening.
Le Moyne shot 13-for-52 (25.0%) from the field, 2-for-5 (40.0%) from behind the arc and 5-for-12 (41.7%) from the charity stripe.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they conclude their three-game homestand and play host to American International in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven.
