Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 20 points and junior guard
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) netted a career-high of 19 as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team rallied back from a 15 point halftime deficit to defeat Nyack College by a score of 79-71 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night from Bowman Gymnasium. With the win, the Owls improved to 6-9 overall, while the Warriors from Nyack fell to 6-9.
Nyack lit up the Owls defense in the first half, knocking down 54.3% of their shots from the field (19-for-35) and converting 14 of 17 free throw attempts (82.4%). Brian Roberts led all scorers in the opening stanza with 15 points and seven rebounds. Corbett led the Southern Connecticut offense in the first half with 13 points, as the Owls entered the intermission trailing by a score of 55-40.
The Owls stormed back in the second half, engineering a 14-0 run to pull within two at 61-59. Senior forward Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.) scored six points over the 6:50 span to lead the Southern Connecticut comeback. The Owls continued to roll, and a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) with 6:39 remaining gave the Owls the lead for good. Nyack could muster only 16 points in the second half compared to 39 for Southern Connecticut, as the Owls took the victory by a score of 79-71.
McNeill finished with 17 points and Harris added 12 to join Bell and Corbett in double figures. Senior forward Devon Sullivan (Jamaica, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and Harris led the team in assists with five.
Roberts finished as the high-man for Nyack with 17 points, Sheanan Martinez added 16 and Mickell Vickers tacked on 11 for the Warriors.
For the game, the Owls shot 27-for-55 (49.1%) from the floor, 20-for-29 (69%) from the free throw line and 5-for-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. Nyack shot 24-for-61 (39.3%) from the field, 19-for-29 (65.5%) from the charity stripe and 4-for-19 (21.1%) from behind the arc.
The Owls return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 19, as they resume their Northeast-10 Conference schedule against the Assumption Greyhounds. The action tips off from Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass. at 3:30 p.m.
