No. 17 Women’s Basketball Falls At Assumption

Three Owls finish in double figures

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) led three Owls in double figures with 19 points on Saturday afternoon, but the No. 17 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated by Assumption, 84-69, in Northeast-10 Conference play at Laska Gymnasium. Assumption's Bethany Plasski led all scorers with 20 points as the Greyhounds had five score in double digits. With the loss, SCSU falls to 12-5 (8-4 NE-10), while Assumption improves to 16-3 (10-2 NE-10) with the win.

A little over midway through the first half, Assumption went on a seven-minute, 19-4 run, keyed by 10 points from Plasski to take a 40-19 lead with 2:29 to play in the opening period. From there, SCSU went on an 11-2 run including points from four different players to cut the Greyhound lead to 42-30 at the halftime break.

For SCSU, senior forward Rochelle Johnson (Norwalk, Conn.) led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half, nearly posting a double-double before halftime. Senior guard Kaylie Schiavetta (Northport, N.Y.) contributed seven points for the Owls in the opening stanza.

Assumption's Plasski led all scorers with 14 points in the first half and was followed by Charde Floyd, who chipped in nine points for the Greyhounds. Sara Czarnecki led Assumption with six rebounds in the first half while Trish Gardner handed out a half-high five assists.

Assumption wasted no time getting out of the gate in the second half, as they put together a quick 10-0 run within the first five minutes, featuring four points from Kayla Parker, to take a 54-35 lead with 14:57 to play. SCSU would later close the gap to 13 points at 58-45, but Assumption would put together a 10-2 run to put the game pretty much out of reach at 68-47 with 8:12 to play. The Greyhounds would push the lead as high as 22 and go on to win by 15 points, 84-69.

For SCSU, Lynch led the way with 19 points on 7-for-20 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double as she grabbed seven rebounds as well. Johnson finished with a career-high 14 points on 6-for-14 shooting and collected a team-high nine rebounds to finish just short of a double-double as well. Schiavetta made it a trio of Owls in double figures with 12 points on 4-for-9 from the floor.

Plasski led all scorers with 20 points on 5-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line for Assumption. Floyd scored 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to tally her sixth double-double of the season. Also in double figures for Assumption were Molly Griffiths (15 points), Gardner (11) and Parker (11).

SCSU shot 25-for-72 (34.7%) from the floor, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from three-point range and 14-for-17 (82.4%) from the free-throw line on the evening.

Assumption shot 33-for-61 (54.1%) from the field, 2-for-7 (28.6%) from behind the arc and 16-for-22 (72.7%) from the charity stripe.

The Owls return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 22 when they visit Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium in North Easton, Mass.
