Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) netted a team-high 15 points and junior forward
Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 13 points and a team- and career-high eight rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped their fourth consecutive decision, falling to Southern New Hampshire by a score of 75-65 from Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Owls fell to 6-13 overall and 2-12 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Penmen from Southern New Hampshire improved to 10-9 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
The Penmen built a lead of eight points late in the first half, on the back of 10 points from Troy Bowen and eight points, four rebounds and five assists from Sam Carey, but the Owls closed the opening stanza with a 15-4 run to enter the intermission leading by three points at 42-39. Corbett netted 11 points and Bell added 10 for the Owls in the first half. Senior forward Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.) scored nine points and paced the Owls rebounding effort with four boards in the opening frame.
Southern Connecticut outscored Southern New Hampshire 16-9 to begin the second half, building a double-digit lead at 58-48 with 9:37 remaining. Over the next 6:23, the Penmen pieced together a 16-4 run en route to building what would ultimately prove to be their final lead at 64-62. Southern Connecticut would muster only three more points the rest of the way, while Southern New Hampshire connected on their free throw attempts down the stretch to claim the victory 75-65.
Joining Corbett and Bell in double figures for the Owls were junior guard
Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.), who scored a career-high 12 points, and McNeill, who finished with 10. Junior guard
Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) scored seven points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Senior forward Devon Sullivan (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored eight points to round out the Southern Connecticut offense.
Bowen led all scorers with 21 points and Carey finished with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when they host St. Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven.
