Women’s Basketball Eases Past St. Rose, 84-65

Lynch leads four Owls in double figures

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior forward Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) tied for the scoring lead with 24 points on Wednesday night to lead four players in double figures as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated St. Rose, 84-65, in Northeast-10 Conference play at Moore Fieldhouse. Senior forward Kaylie Schiavetta (Northport, N.Y.) tied her career high with 17 points for SCSU. Emily Gottstein led St. Rose with 24 points. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for SCSU, which improves to 13-7 (9-6 NE-10) while St. Rose falls to 9-10 (6-9 NE-10).

The two clubs traded baskets early on before SCSU used a 13-0 run featuring buckets from four Owls to take a 24-10 lead with 10:32 to play in the first half. SCSU would extend the lead to 18 before the half ended and took a 51-33 lead into the intermission.

For SCSU, Lynch led the way with 15 points while Schiavetta was right behind her with 14 of her own. Senior guard Michelle Martinik (Monroe, Conn.) led the Owls with four rebounds in the opening stanza while Lynch collected a half-high five steals.

St. Rose's Emily Gottstein led all players with both 18 points and five rebounds in the opening half. The 51 points surrendered by St. Rose was the most the Golden Knights have surrendered in a first half all season.

After St. Rose notched the first basket of the second stanza, SCSU rattled off an 11-4 run, including four points from Lynch and three from Schiavetta, to take a 62-39 lead with 16:24 to play. The Owls would push the lead to 24 points on three separate occasions, the final being on a three-pointer by senior guard Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) with 8:13 to play. SCSU would go on to win by 19 points, 84-65.

Lynch led four Owls in double figures on the evening as she tied for the game scoring lead with 24 points on 10-20 shooting from the floor. Joining her in double digits were Schiavetta (17 points), Martinik (11) and sophomore forward Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.). Lynch also led SCSU with six rebounds, a career-high six assists and seven steals.

For St. Rose, Gottstein matched Lynch with 24 points on 7-for-16 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line while no other Golden Knight tallied double digits. Ashley Anderson grabbed a game-best 11 boards for St. Rose while Gottstein corralled nine rebounds of her own to narrowly miss a double-double.

SCSU shot 32-for-71 (45.1%) from the floor, 6-for-20 (30.0%) from three-point range and 14-for-17 (82.4%) from the free-throw line on the evening.

St. Rose shot 21-for-47 (44.7%) from the field, 4-for-9 (44.4%) from behind the arc and 19-for-27 (70.4%) from the charity stripe.

The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when they host St. Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven.
