Football Team Cruises Past Bentley, 47-14

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore tailback John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) rushed for a new career-high for the third straight game on Friday night at Jess Dow Field. After rushing for 180 and 212 yards in each the past two outings, Wiechman rushed for 229 yards on 32 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 47-14 Owls' victory over Bentley University.

The Owls won their third in a row and improved to 4-2, 3-1 in Northeast-10. Bentley is now 3-4, 2-2 in league play.

SCSU struck first with a seven-play, 56 yard drive that culminated in a four-yard run from Wiechman. Following a PAT from Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) the hosts were in front, 7-0.

Hazelton tacked on back-to-back field goals and extended the lead to 13-0 just 39 seconds into the second quarter.

The Owls added two more scores before Bentley got on the scoreboard. Wiechman finished a six-play, 66 yard drive with an 11-yard run to make it 20-0 after Hazelton's PAT. Wiechman then finished off a seven-play, 63 yard drive with a 21 yard scamper to extend the lead to 27-0.

However, Bentley scored the next 14 points to climb within 27-14 at halftime.

The Owls put the game away with three touchdowns in the third quarter.

Wiechman found the end zone for the fourth time on a two-yard run just 2:38 into the second half. That concluded a seven-play, 85 yard drive. The PAT failed, making it a 33-14 lead.

Craig Toulouse (Gardiner, Maine) finished a 10-play, 70 yard drive with a one-yard run up the middle that extended the lead to 40-14 after Hazelton's extra point.

The Owls closed the scoring with a defensive touchdown. Andrew Pratt (West Haven, Conn.) forced a fumble on a sack, and Jaliem Cuttino (New Britain, Conn.) scooped it up and scored on a 15-yard return.

Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) finished 13-of-20 for 225 yards on the evening. The receiving corps was led by Ty Marshall (Ellenwood, Ga.), who had six catches for 96 yards and Chris Bergeski (Mountainside, N.J.), who had six catches for 89 yards.

Pratt and Eric Holter (Milford, Conn.) each had two sacks on the night. In all, the Owls totaled nine quarterback sacks against Bentley.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they host St. Anselm at 1 p.m.
