SCSU Drops Northeast-10 Conference Match To No. 22 Merrimack College

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The men's soccer team fell to No. 22 Merrimack College on Saturday night at Jess Dow Field by the final score of 4-1. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 4-5-1, 3-2-4 in NE-10 competition, while the Warriors of Merrimack improved to 9-2-2, 6-2-1 in the conference.

Greg Motta scored the games first goal in the 16th minute of play off a pass from Robbie Sabadoz, to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. 12 minutes later, Wayne Sygrove found Matt Sanderson on the wing, who took a touch to the middle and blasted a shot into the goal, for a 2-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half of action, Merrimack struck again when Martin Gabadian slipped a rebound past Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.), extending the Warrior lead to 3-0. In the 81st minute, Sygrove added one more insurance goal for the Warriors, increasing the margin to four goals.

In the closing seconds of the game, Aazin Langroudi (Hamden, Conn.) scored off a pass from Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) for the Owls. Despite the late effort, SCSU fell short by the final score of 4-1.

Esposito made four saves in the losing effort for the Owls, while Rob Pedra tallied three saves in the win for the Warriors.

SCSU will return to action on Oct. 15 when it hosts NE-10 conference foe Stonehill College at Jess Dow Field. The time of the game is set for 7 p.m.
