NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) scored two goals in the game, as SCSU went on to defeat Stonehill College on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field. The Owls, unbeaten in their last four out of five games, improved to 5-5-1, 4-2-4 in NE-10 competition, while the Skyhawks of Stonehill fell to 4-7-2, 1-7-1 in the conference.
SCSU notched the first goal of the game in the 8th minute of play, when Templeton headed home a cross from
Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) for an early 1-0 lead. The Owls controlled much of the first half, including a 4-1 advantage in the shots on goal category, as they took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
SCSU wasted little time adding to the lead in the second half, as freshman
Daniel Goldberg (Williston Park, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season just two minutes into play after halftime.
After that, Templeton scored his second goal of the game in the 72nd for his sixth goal of the season off a pass from
Jeremy Tavares (Waterbury, Conn.), extending the Owls lead to 3-0. Two minutes later,
Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) tacked on another SCSU goal increasing the margin to 4-0.
Farrier tallied the last Southern goal on a corner kick from Jankovic, completing a 5-0 shutout for the Owls.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) posted two saves for his sixth shutout of the season, while Brian Guerrini tallied six saves in the loss for the Skyhawks.
SCSU will go on the road for its next match, when the team travels to Colchester, VT for a conference match against St. Michael's College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
