NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team came into Saturday night needing a win against St. Anselm College and pulled through with an exciting 2-1 double overtime victory at Jess Dow Field. On a night where three senior athletes were recognized for their outstanding careers at SCSU, the Owls celebrated Senior Night with a crucial conference win.
With the win, the Owls clinched a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and improved to 6-6-5, 5-3-5 in NE-10 competition. The Hawks dropped to 6-9-2, 4-5-2 in the conference.
The Hawks scored the games first goal in the 19th minute of play, when Giuseppe LaRocca took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that found the bottom right corner of the goal for an early 1-0 lead.
Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) responded just seven minutes later, when
Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) whipped in a corner kick that
Ian Serrao (Glastonbury, Conn.) flicked to Templeton for the equalizer. The goal was Templeton's, team-leading seventh of the season.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half, sending the game into overtime.
In the second overtime with just two minutes left to play,
Aazin Langroudi (Hamden, Conn.) took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that tagged the upper right corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) recorded six saves in his sixth win of the season, while John Corridan tallied six saves in the loss for the Hawks.
SCSU will take a week off and wait to see how the rest of the Northeast-10 Conference unfolds. The NE-10 Tournament will begin on Nov. 2 at the home site of the higher seeds.
