Volleyball To Play Three Games On The Road

The Owls look to improve on their 19-4 record Tuesday night against AIC.

GAMES AHEAD
The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team is coming off a week in which they went 2-0 and have improved their record to 19-4 and 4-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Owls defeated Dominican for the second time this season on Thursday night. They traveled to New Hampshire on Saturday where they faced conference opponent Franklin Pierce and won 3-2. The team has three games this week, all of which are on the road. On Tuesday, October 7, the Owls will get another look at Northeast-10 opponent AIC. These teams met earlier in the year and SCSU won by the score of 3-1. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mass. On Saturday, October 11, the Owls travel to Rutherford, N.J. for a tri-match against Philadelphia and Felician. Their first game against Philadelphia is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and they will play shortly after against Felician at 5:00 p.m.

SEPTEMBER SUCCESS
The Owls finished the month of September with a record of 14-3 and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Jenna Tammel led all Owls with 183 kills and 175 digs in 59 games. She was selected to the honor roll three times in September and continues to be a leader on the court. Leah Filonuk was second on the team with 142 kills and Broghan Miller was third with 104. Filonuk was awarded Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week on September 22 and was also selected to the honor roll twice. Andrea Nolan led the Owls in assists with 356, averaging 7.91 per game. She was selected to the honor roll twice in September. The team looks to continue their success and is already off to a good start by winning their first two games in October.

WELCOME ABOARD
The Owls welcome nine newcomers to this year's team including freshmen Megan Lyons, Laura Garbarino, Chelsea Callahan, Leah Filonuk, Ashleigh Scully and Andrea Nolan, sophomore Broghan Miller and juniors Jenna Tammel and Sarah Houseknecht.

OWLS ON THE HONOR ROLL
The Owls have had three student-athletes earn recognition on the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll so far this year. Jenna Tammel, Leah Filonuk and Andrea Nolan were all selected on Sept. 2. Tammel and Nolan were selected to the honor roll for the second time this season on Sept. 22 and Tammel was selected once again on Sept. 29 for the third time. Filonuk was selected as Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week on Sept. 22 and was selected to the weekly honor roll on Sept. 29 for the second time.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls have been ranked 12th in this year's Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Maria Arenas and Nekane Mendizabal have been named team captains for the 2008 season.

THE UPWARD CLIMB CONTINUED
The Owls improved on their overall win total for the fourth straight year by virtue of an 11 win campaign in 2007.

COMEBACK KIDS
Of the team's 11 victories in 2007, four came after trailing in the match by at least one game. The final occurrence came on Sept. 22 against Le Moyne, when the Owls dropped the first two games before rallying for a 3-2 victory. It was the first time in program history that the Owls had defeated Le Moyne.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Sophomore Robin Priest enjoys double duty as a member of the softball team as well as the volleyball squad.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action Oct. 7 against AIC. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
