SCSU Shuts Down Pace University, 5-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) posted her fifth shutout of the season, as Southern defeated Pace University, 5-0 on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. With the result, the Owls are now unbeaten in their last five contests and have record of 7-3-1, 5-2-1 in Northeast-10 competition. With the loss, the Setters fell to 2-8 overall, 2-7 in the league.

Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.) put the Owls on the scoreboard with her second goal of the year in the 20th minute of play. Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) made a pass to the middle and found MacMurray all alone in front of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Just 13 minutes later, sophomore Hailey Huntington (Wallingford, Conn.) found the back of the net off a pass from Nicole Burton (Warwick, N.Y.). At half time the Owls were in front, 2-0.

In the second half, Christina Nunes (Naugatuck, Conn.) extended the Owl lead to 3-0, when she blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the upper corner of the goal for her second goal of the season. Burton added another goal in the 85th minute off a free kick and Lindsay Stanton (Oxford, Conn.) tacked on one more insurance goal in the final seconds off a pass from Nicole Reverberi (Massapequa, N.Y.), finalizing a 5-0 shutout.

DiDio and Alicia Purzycki (Guilford, Conn.) tallied four saves for the Owls seventh win of the season, as Breanna Gault and Monique Morey combined for four saves in the losing effort for the Setters.

Southern will travel to North Andover, Mass. on Oct. 11 for a match against Merrimack College. Both teams are currently ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA New England Regional Poll as of Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
