Men’s Basketball Edged by Pace, 70-69

Kieran Ramsey registered his third double-double of the season but the Owls lost 70-69 to Northeast-10 opponent Pace.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –Junior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman forward Kieran Ramsey (N. Hollywood, Calif.) both registered double-doubles for the second consecutive game but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was edged by Northeast-10 conference opponent Pace by a score of 70-69. The Owls are now 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the NE-10. Pace is now 2-2 and 1-1 in the conference.

Pace came out strong to take a 19-7 lead in the first half but SCSU came right back, going on a 21 to four run. Pace closed the half by scoring the final six of eight points, heading into halftime with a 36-33 lead.

Neither team could control a lead in the second half as evident by the eight lead changes in the final 20 minutes of regulation. The Owls trailed by three with 1:31 remaining in the game but took a one point lead after a layup by sophomore Lance Long (New Haven, Conn.) put them up 69-68 with 0:49 seconds left. However, SCSU could not hold on and a couple foul shots by the Setters clinched a 70-69 win.

Mazzarella and Ramsey controlled the paint once again for the Owls as they out rebounded their opponent by 21. Mazzarella set a new career high with 20 points and added 10 rebounds, four blocks and was the leading assist man with another career-high five. Ramsey set career highs as well in both points (17) and rebounds (10). Sophomore Andrew Zito (Windsor, Conn.) tied his career high with 10 points. Also joining the Owls in double-digits was junior Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.).

Long set a career high Tuesday night as well with eight points. Freshman Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added four points for the Owls.

Adrian Mills of Pace had a game-high 26 points and Ryan Woods added 14.

The Owls return to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 3 as they remain home for another Northeast-10 Conference game against New Haven. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
