NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) scored a career-high 29 points, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Pace University for their first Northeast-10 Conference win of the season on Tuesday evening at Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to an overall record of 2-2, 1-2 in the league, while the Setters dropped to 1-1, 1-1 in NE-10 competition.
In the first five minutes of action, the two clubs traded baskets neither team putting a run together. SCSU team captains Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) and Lentz were able to put a charge into the Owls, building a six point lead with 10 minutes left to play in the first half. The Owls as a team connected on 4-9 from behind the three-point line in the first half, a crucial component of their offense.
However the Setters offense came to life going on a 16-8 run to close out the last eight minutes of the half, taking a 36-30 lead into intermission. Pace was led by Taylor Losey's 15 points on 6-8 shooting, 2-4 from behind the three-point line. Allen led the Owls with nine points and three rebounds in the first half.
The Setters maintained their six point margin for the first three minutes of the second half, until the SCSU offense came to life. The Owls chipped away eventually bringing the game to a tie score. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Lentz, Allen and
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) took over the game scoring 43 of the team's 54 second half points. The Owls took the lead with 12:09 remaining eventually increasing their lead to as much as 14 points.
Lentz registered 29 points, 21 of which came in the second half on 11-17 shooting, 5-7 from behind the arc. Allen recorded 20 points, Smith added 15, and hauled in six rebounds and
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) scored seven points and dragged down 10 rebounds for the Owls.
Taylor Losey registered 19 points and Brittany Shields scored 13 points and tallied nine rebounds in their first loss of season for the Setters.
The women's basketball team will challenge the University of New Haven on Nov. 29 in search for their second Northeast-10 Conference victory. Game time for this event is set for 3 p.m.
