WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was defeated by Northeast-10 opponent New Haven in a non-conference game by the score of 64-51. The Owls are now 0-9 on the season and 0-6 in the NE-10. New Haven is 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Senior forward
Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls with a team-high 17 points.
Early in the first half, the game went back and forth for the first six minutes of regulation. The Chargers, led by Cassius Chaney, went on a 10-0 run to lead by 9 nine with 11:21 remaining in the half. Chaney and the Chargers were too much for the Owls as they maintained a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the half.
The second half went back and forth early on as the Owls could not seem to cut the deficit to less than eight. Sophomore
Andrew Zito (Windsor, Conn.) hit a couple from behind-the-arc but it came too late as New Haven pulled away to defeat SCSU for the second time in two weeks by the score of 64-51.
Joining Bell in double figures was sophomore guard
Lance Long (New Haven, Conn.) who posted a career-high 11 points. Junior center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded eight points, eight rebounds, four blocks and was the leading assist man with five.
Chaney led the Chargers with a game-high 23 points.
The Owls have two weeks off until their next contest against non-conference opponent Dowling. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29 in Oakdale, N.Y.
