BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team traveled to Bridgeport, Conn. for a non-conference match-up and defeated the University of Bridgeport, 81-64, on Saturday afternoon at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium. With the win, the Owls improved to 3-0 in non-conference match-ups, ascending to an overall record of 4-5, 1-5 in Northeast-10 Conference competition. The Purple Knights dropped to 1-7 on the season.
Early in the first half of action, the Purple Knights jumped in front controlling a 7-2 lead five minutes into play. However, the Owls would wake up quickly, closing into their early deficit with an 18-13 run over the next 10 minutes. Each team would add another nine points in the closing minutes, heading into halftime tied at 29.
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) led the way for the Owls with 10 points and five rebounds in the half. Shannon Malone and Siobhan Moore each tallied six points in the first half for the Purple Knights.
After shooting just 37.8 percent from the field in the first half, the Owls looked like a new team following halftime. Despite falling behind by four early into the second half, SCSU's offense would come to life behind the hot hands of
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.). The two forwards would lead the Owls on a 29-15 run, taking a 10 point lead with five minutes remaining in the game.
Southern would continue to pull away as free throws by
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Fiola would seal the first road victory of the season for the Owls. The freshman from Fall River, Mass., finished with a career-high 18 points (16 in the second half) on 6-9 shooting, 2-2 from behind the arc, hauled in four rebounds and dished out two assists. Smith registered a career-high 17 points on 8-11 shooting, dragged down eight rebounds and tallied two assists for the Owls.
Johannes and
Sarah Schicher (Vienna, Austria) controlled the paint, each scoring 12 points and pulled in six boards for the Owls. Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) added 11 points and four assists, as Lentz poured in nine points and tallied five rebounds in the victory.
SCSU out-rebounded the Purple Knights, 47-31, for the game and shot a remarkable 73.1 percent from the field in the second half.
Up next for the Southern Connecticut State women's basketball team will travel to Orangeburg, New York to take on the Chargers of Dominican College. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
