PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated by Holy Family University, 78-50, on Tuesday evening at the Campus Center Gymnasium in Philadelphia, Pa. With the loss, the Owls have dropped four of their last five games descending their overall record to 4-7 on the season. The Tigers improved to 8-4 overall with the win.
Holy Family came out on fire, connecting on 50 percent of their first 12 shots taking a 14-3 lead with 12:58 remaining in the first half. Despite the early deficit, the Owls would cut into the Tiger lead behind the long-range shooting of freshman guard,
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) Fiola went 4-5 from behind the three-point line, netting 12 points in the first half, leaving the Owls trailing 41-21 at intermission.
Southern came out looking for revenge in the second half, as the team went on a 9-4 run in the first five minutes of action. The Owls picked up the intensity on defense forcing turnovers, eventually cutting the lead down to six with eight minutes left to go in regulation. Freshman
Sarah Schicher (Vienna, Austria) scored eight points in the 23-9 run for the Owls.
Holy Family fired back with a 16-4 run of their own extending the lead to 18 with 3:33 remaining in the game. The Tigers were led by Catherine Carr, who finished the game with a double-double, as she scored 17 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. Lindsey Tennett added 12 points and six rebounds, while Lauren Peters tallied 13 points in the victory.
Fiola and
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) each registered 12 points for the Owls, while Schicher added 10 points and eight boards in the losing effort.
The Owls will open up the new year on the road in Worcester, Mass. on Jan. 3 for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up against Assumption College. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
