NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell short to Northeast-10 opponent Saint Anselm on Saturday in a tough conference game by the score of 48-46. The Owls are now 0-7 on the season and 0-5 in the NE-10. Saint Anselm improved to 7-1 and 5-1 in the conference. Junior center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Owls with his third double-double of the season.
The Owls held Saint Anselm scoreless for the first eight minutes of action but were not able to capitalize as they only scored four points in that time span. With 10:45 remaining in the half, the Hawks took their first lead of the game. They held onto that lead for the remainder of the half as they went into halftime up 27-23.
The second half started the same way the first ended but the Owls never gave up. Trailing by nine with 11:17 remaining, SCSU went on a 15-4 run and took back the lead which they did not have until early in the first half. A lay-up by junior guard
Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) put the Owls up two with 2:06 remaining, but the Hawks pulled away to score the next four points and win their seventh game of the season, 48-46.
Mazzarella continues to put up big numbers down-low, recording a game-high 14 points, 13 rebounds and a game-high six blocks. Joining him in double-digits was Harris with 13 points. Freshman guard
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added nine points and was the leading assist man with three. Freshman forward
Kieran Ramsey (N. Hollywood, Calif.) had a game-high 15 rebounds and junior
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) netted six points.
Saint Anselm had three players in double-digits including John Tello (11), Thomas Baudinet (10) and Pat Luptowski (10).
The Owls travel to Massachusetts for their next contest against Northeast-10 opponent Stonehill. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
