NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINALS REMATCH
Just nine short months ago, the women's basketball team was eliminated from their Northeast-10 Conference Championship run by the Skyhawks of Stonehill College. The returning Owls from last year's squad will certainly be looking for revenge when the team heads up to Easton, Mass. on Dec. 9 for a regular season conference match-up against the first place Skyhawks. The time of the game is set for 5:30 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium.
LAST TIME OUT
The women's basketball team was defeated twice last week by two Northeast-10 Conference opponents. On Wednesday night, UNH defeated the Owls, 69-62, at Moore Field House. Lauren Hood scored a game-high 22 points for the Chargers, as Lexi Allen led the way for the Owls will 18 points of her own. Later in the week on Saturday afternoon, the Owls fell just short again when St. Anselm College picked up their first win of the season at Moore Field House. Freshman
Sarah Schicher was just three blocks short of a triple-double, as she recorded 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Owls.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
Three Skyhawk players have led the way thus far for the first place Stonehill College women's basketball team. Kelsey Simonds and Bethany Tighe lead the team averaging 15.5 points per game, closely followed by sophomore Emily Rousseau with 15.3 points per game. Stonehill ranks third in the league (SCSU first, Saint Rose second) averaging 72 points per game and fourth in the league only allowing 58.9 points per game. The Owls need to keep the Skyhawks off of the free-throw line as they rank first in the league (83%) and must focus in on their three-point defense as Stonehill is averaging nearly 49 percent from behind the arc to be successful in this game.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
2007-08 Northeast-10 Conference All Rookie Team Selection,
Logan Lentz picked up right where she left off from last season. Lentz scored a career-high 29 points on 11-17 shooting, 5-7 from behind the three-point line and tallied four assists against conference foe, Pace University. Later in the week, the team captain dropped 13 points, dished out four assists and recorded four steals in the win over the Pioneers from C.W. Post. The Owls are ranked first in the Northeast-10 in scoring, averaging just over 82 points per game.
AN OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
SCSU had no problem putting points on the board in their first game of the season. The Owls defeated Post 105-61, hitting the 100 point mark for the second time in as many seasons. Four different players reached double-digits in the game and a total of eight players scored in the victory.
ROOKIE BENCH BOSS
The 2007-08 season marked the first behind the SCSU bench for head coach Meghan Brown. She posted an above-.500 record in her first campaign as the Owls finished 15-14. Brown wasted no time recording her first career victory, which came in her first game, a 92-71 win over Northeast-10 Conference foe St. Anselm on Nov. 17 at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven. The rookie coach picked up her first win over a nationally ranked team on Dec. 16, when SCSU tallied a 79-67 victory over No. 11 Clayton State. Brown was also successful in her first Northeast-10 Tournament game, a 64-46 win at Pace in the first round on March 2.
IN THE NORTHEAST-10
The Southern Connecticut State University's women's basketball team was placed in the No. 13 slot for the 2008-09 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
STRONG VETERAN PRESENCE
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team will return five players from last year's team. The Owls will look for leadership from juniors Stephanie Hiriak, Lexi Allen,
Jacqueline Johannes and
Allyson Smith, and sophomore
Logan Lentz.
LEADING THE WAY
Coach Brown and the Southern women's basketball team have selected Lexi Allen,
Logan Lentz and Stephanie Hiriak as team captains for the 2008-09 season. Each of these athletes played key roles the 2007-08 campaign and will look to guide the new comers in the upcoming season.
WELCOME ABOARD
The Owls will bring six new players to this year's team including the inside presence of
Tiffany Thompson, Lindsey Stergio and
Sarah Schicher. The Owls will look for assistance at the guard position from
Alex Fiola,
Lauren Allen and Jessica Williams.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Logan Lentz wasted no time making herself comfortable as a freshman in New Haven. The Chambersburg, Pa. native led an offense that wound up first in the Northeast-10 in scoring (72.2 points per game), turnover margin (+5.69 per game) and assist/turnover ratio (0.93). Lentz finished fifth in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.52) and 11th in assists per game (3.45).
TAKING CARE OF THE BASKETBALL
SCSU led the Northeast-10 in both turnover margin (+5.69 per game) and assist/turnover ratio (0.93). The Owls were led in the ball-control department by
Logan Lentz, who finished fifth in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.52) and 11th in assists per game (3.45).
SCORING IN BUNCHES
The Owls led the Northeast-10 in scoring offense in 2007-08. SCSU averaged 72.2 points per game, one point more than Franklin Pierce (71.2 points per game).
HANGING A HUNDRED
SCSU's 106-40 victory over Felician on Dec. 3 marked the first time the Owls had reached the 100-point plateau since Nov. 18, 1995, when they posted a 101-77 victory at Molloy. It was the first time SCSU had scored 100 points at home since Feb. 27, 1979, when they defeated Northeastern 100-62. The 106 points was the most scored by an SCSU team since the 1973-74 season, when they twice posted 109 points in 109-41 and 109-27 victories over Rhode Island and Connecticut, respectively.
DISHING IT OUT
Logan Lentz handed out a career-high nine assists against Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 26. Lentz led the Owls in assists in 2007-08 with 100 (3.45 per game). As a team, SCSU dished out 15.10 assists per game, good for fourth in the Northeast-10.
ON DECK
The Southern Connecticut State University will enjoy a long break after this contest, as they will not return to action until Dec. 20 against the University of Bridgeport. This away non-conference game is set for 2 p.m.
