NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The men's soccer team hosted Molloy College for a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. Molloy College handed SCSU its third loss of the season, with a 1-0 victory. With the loss, the Owls dropped to (3-3-1), while the Lions improved to (2-3-1).
The two teams played the first half to a scoreless tie. SCSU clearly held the majority of possession and created the better chances in the first 45 minutes, however could not find the back of the net. The Owls controlled a 6-2 shot advantage before halftime.
In the second half of action, Molloy scored the game's first goal in the 49th minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Graeme Roderick hit a volley from 30 yards out into the top right corner that stunned the SCSU fans.
The Owls began to pressure the Lions for the remainder of the half. SCSU had its best chance when
Marino Crocco (North Haven, Conn.) headed a ball just over the crossbar on a cross from
Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad). SCSU could not score a goal to tie the game, which resulted in its third loss on the year.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) tallied three saves in the losing effort for the Owls.
Southern will go for their third conference win of the season, when Franklin Pierce comes to Jess Dow Field on Sept. 20. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
