Football Team Doubles Up Stonehill, 28-14

Johnny Lee had 86 receiving yards and a touchdown against Stonehill.
EASTON, Mass. – Senior quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) finished 14-of-22 for 230 yards and tossed three touchdowns, while tailback John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) rushed for 180 yards to lead the Southern Connecticut State University football team to a 28-14 victory over Stonehill College on Friday night.

The Owls move to 2-2, 1-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action with the win. The Skyhawks are now 1-2, 0-2 in league play.

Stonehill took the ball off the opening kickoff and went 70 yards in nine plays, culminating on a five-yard run from Jeff Payne. Following the PAT, the Skyhawks were in front, 7-0.

The Owls answered with a four-play, 55-yard drive to tie the game. Roberts found wide receiver Brian Tourtelott (Latham, N.Y.) on a 19-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone to even the score following the made PAT by Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.).

SCSU appeared ready to take the lead, but a forced fumble on Roberts deep in Stonehill territory turned into a 91-yard fumble return for a score by Michael Greene.

Unfazed, the Owls put together a 10-play, 70-yard drive to tie the game. One play after a key fourth down completion to tight end Tom Cerny (Mahwah, N.J.), Roberts connected with Johnny Lee (Norwalk, Conn,) on a 27-yard pass to tie the score at 14 after the made PAT.

Southern Connecticut took the lead later in the second quarter, as broke free on an 85-yard touchdown run to take a 21-14 lead. That was the cushion that the Owls carried into the locker room in halftime.

The Owls then went in front by two scores after tallying the only touchdown of the third quarter. Roberts found Wiechman on a short passing play, but he fumbled on the play. Fortunately, Tourtelott was right on the spot, and he raced in from 35 yards out to make it 28-14 after the PAT.

Wiechman enjoyed his second career 100-yard rushing performance. Coincidentally, the other occurrence also came against Stonehill, that coming in last year's meeting.

Lee led the Owls with five catches for 86 yards. Jerome Pinckney (Norcross, Ga.) paced the defense with 12 tackles.

As a unit, the SCSU defense merited just 212 yards on the evening.

SCSU returns to action on Saturday, September 27 for a 1 p.m. road game against Merrimack.
