A LOOK AHEAD
The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team is coming off a week in which they won five games, improving their record to 14-3 and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 conference. The Owls went on the road earlier in the week, defeating both Dominican and Assumption. They returned home on Friday and Saturday, beating Saint Anselm, UMass Lowell and Wilmington. The Owls travel to New York on Monday to face Caldwell for the second time this season at 7:00 p.m. They defeated Caldwell 3-0 earlier this year at Pelz Gymnasium. SCSU will return home on Wednesday, September 24 for a conference match against Bentley. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 27, the Owls will host a tri-match against A.I.C. at 11:00 p.m. and Molloy at 3:00 p.m.
CONFERENCE PLAY
The Owls got their first look at some conference opponents last week and defeated all three of them. They beat Assumption and Saint Anselm by a combined score of 6-0. On Saturday, they faced a difficult challenge against UMass Lowell as the lead went back and forth. In the fifth and final game, UMass Lowell only needed two more points to end the match but the Owls remained composed and rallied to score the next three points. They beat UMass Lowell 3-2 and proved they can win when trailing. With three wins in the Northeast-10, the Owls have already surpassed their conference win total from last year.
WELCOME ABOARD
The Owls welcome nine newcomers to this year's team including freshmen Megan Lyons, Laura Garbarino, Chelsea Callahan, Leah Filonuk, Ashleigh Scully and Andrea Nolan, sophomore Broghan Miller and juniors Jenna Tammel and Sarah Houseknecht.
OWLS ON THE HONOR ROLL
The Owls have had three student-athletes earn recognition on the Northeast-10 conference weekly honor roll so far this year. Jenna Tammel, Leah Filonuk and Andrea Nolan were all selected on Sept. 2.
IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls have been ranked 12th in this year's Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches Poll.
THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Maria Arenas and Nekane Mendizabal have been named team captains for the 2008 season.
THE UPWARD CLIMB CONTINUED
The Owls improved on their overall win total for the fourth straight year by virtue of an 11 win campaign in 2007.
COMEBACK KIDS
Of the team's 11 victories in 2007, four came after trailing in the match by at least one game. The final occurrence came on Sept. 22 against Le Moyne, when the Owls dropped the first two games before rallying for a 3-2 victory. It was the first time in program history that the Owls had defeated Le Moyne.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Sophomore Robin Priest enjoys double duty as a member of the softball team as well as the volleyball squad.
