Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Coach Tom Lang achieved career milestone win No. 300 on Saturday night by defeating Bentley College 2-1 at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved to 4-4-2, 3-1-2 in Northeast-10 competition, while the Falcons dropped to 4-5, 1-4.

Southern wasted little time getting the games first goal, scoring in the 2nd minute of action. Sophomore Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) placed a free kick into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.

The Owls continued to keep the pressure on the Bentley defense. Marino Crocco (North Haven, Conn.) broke through in the 29th minute on a pass from Templeton, but a diving save from the Falcon goalkeeper, Michael Nikiforov, kept a 1-0 Owl lead at halftime.

However, in the 67th minute of play, Eric Heuze scored the equalizer on a pass from Bill Nussdorfer for the Falcons, making it a tie score at one apiece.

SCSU and Bentley battled back and forth with opportunities to take the lead in a very physical game. In the 87th minute, Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) found Igor Santos (Centerville, Mass.) alone in the middle of the penalty area, who beat Nikiforov for the game-winning goal.

Coach Lang has coached at SCSU for 11 seasons and has accumulated a record of 182-30-28. Lang also has nine Division II playoff appearances and two NCAA championships.

Southern will go for their fifth win of the season on Sept. 30 away at Assumption College. Game time for the match is set for 7 p.m.
