NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated Mercy this evening, 3-0. Junior
Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn.) had a game-high 14 kills for the Owls and freshman
Andrea Nolan added a game-high 18 assists. SCSU won by the scores of 25-11, 26-24 and 25-18.
The Owls improve to 5-1 on the season. Mercy is now 2-3.
Mercy was no match for the Owls in the first game as they won by a commanding 14 points. Sophomore
Broghan Miller (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Owls to an early 7-2 lead and they never looked back.
The second game was not as easy, but the Owls kept their composure and won by the score of 26-24. With help from junior
Tara Bregensir (Coal Township, Pa.) and junior
Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.), SCSU was able to pull away with the victory. Chase added a season-high 10 assists in the win.
SCSU was down early in the third game but bounced back strong and won by the score of 25-17. Tammel took over and accounted for seven of her 14 kills in the final game.
SCSU has now shutout four out of its six opponents this season.
The Owls will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend to play in the Lock Haven Tournament. Game times are set for 4:30 p.m. on Friday Sept. 5 and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 6.
