Four Owls Reach Double-Digits but Drop NE-10 Road Game to Franklin Pierce, 68-60

RINDGE, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Northeast-10 conference opponent Franklin Pierce on the road Saturday afternoon by the score of 68-60. Four Owls reached double-digits in the losing effort including a double-double from senior forward Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Southern is now 1-13 overall on the season and 0-11 in the NE-10. Franklin Pierce improved to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

The Ravens jumped out early to a 5-0 lead but a lay-up by senior guard Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) off a Franklin Pierce turnover put them up one. Bell dropped 11 of his 13 points in the first half but an 11-0 run put them down 12 with 5:18 remaining. The deficit was too much for the Owls to recover from as they headed into halftime trailing 39-29.

Franklin Pierce came out strong to begin the second half. They lead by as much as 19 but the Owls cut the margin to 10 with 4:11 left in the game. However, the Owls could not get any closer until the final shot of the game, as they dropped a Northeast-10 road game by the score of 68-60.

Bell and Gardenhire were joined by senior guard Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) and junior guard Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) in double-digits. Corbett had a team-high 15 points followed by Jones with 14. Jones was great from the line as he shot 10-for-12. Junior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 14 boards and a career-high seven blocks.

The Owls travel to Massachusetts for their next contest against NE-10 opponent UMass-Lowell. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
