Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) posted a season-high 20 points including three from behind-the-arc but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to NE-10 rival Merrimack on Saturday afternoon by a score of 72-60.
Southern is now 1-15 overall on the season and 0-12 in the NE-10. With the win, Merrimack remains atop the NE-10 with a conference record of 9-2 and overall mark of 13-3.
It was all Warriors in the first half as they headed into halftime with a 37-22 lead on 6-for-10 shooting from the three point line. Roland Davis led the way with 12 points, all coming from downtown.
Despite outscoring the Warriors 38-33 in the final 20 minutes of regulation, the first half deficit proved to be too much for the Owls. Corbett and senior guard
Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) were determined to knock off top ranked Merrimack as they dropped a total of 28 points in the second half but it wasn't enough.
Gardenhire dropped all of his 15 points in the second half and has now reached double-digits in the team's last three contests. Junior center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) led the team in rebounds with 11 followed by senior guard
Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) who grabbed nine.
Leading the way for Merrimack was Darin Mency and David Kennedy with 14 points each.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 20 for a NE-10 road game at Bentley. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
