Box Score
WALTHAM, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Bentley on Tuesday night by the score of 79-53. Three Owls posted double-digit figures in a losing effort as Southern dropped to 1-16 overall and 0-13 in the NE-10. Bentley is now 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
The Falcons grabbed a large lead in the first half as they shot 6-for-10 from behind-the-arc and 10-for-14 from the line. Despite taking eight more shots than their opponent, the Owls could not find the basket and trailed at halftime 44-26.
Freshman forward
Kieran Ramsey (N. Hollywood, Calif.) dropped 11 of his team-high 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the first 20 minutes of regulation and junior guard
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) added seven. Lew Finnegan and Tom Dowling of Bentley dropped 12 and 11 respectively as they hit a total of four threes.
The second half went back and forth early on but the margin was too high for the Owls to rebound from. With 15:21 remaining, Southern went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 16 but Finnegan responded quickly with a three of his own.
Bentley cooled off in the second half as they shot only 3-for-13 from downtown but they made up for it from the charity stripe as they went 8-for-8. A jumper by Joe Fremeau with 43 seconds remaining was the last field goal as Bentley came away with the win.
Senior guard
Justin Gardenhire (Rosedale, N.Y.) and
Derrick Corbett tallied 11 and 10 points as they have now dropped double-digits for the fourth consecutive game. Gardenhire was also the leading assist man with four. Junior center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) continues to be a force down low as he posted game-highs in rebounds (11) and blocks (4) and dropped six points.
The Owls return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 22 for a non-conference road game scheduled for 7 p.m. at Felician.
