NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 home game on Saturday afternoon by a score of 66-58 to Saint Rose. Junior center
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) was the leading scorer for the Owls with 11.
Southern is now 1-18 overall on the season and 0-14 in the NE-10. Saint Rose defeated SCSU for the second time this season and has improved to 8-11 and 6-8 in the conference.
The Owls came out hot as they took an early 11-2 lead behind senior guard
Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) as he dropped six points in less than a minute. The momentum remained on the Owls side as they controlled the lead for most of the first half and went into the locker room up 28-27.
The second half was all Golden Knights, however, as they grabbed a quick lead and never looked back. The Owls got in foul trouble early but managed to keep it close after freshman guard
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a three-point play to tie the game at 37-37 with 13:36 remaining. At the 5:51 mark, the Golden Knights pulled away as Jermaine Clark hit two foul shots to put his team up 10, which was all they needed as they came away with a 66-58 victory.
Mazzarella was the lone Owl in double-digits as he dropped all 11 points in the second half. Senior forward
Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied eight, a team-high 10 boards and was the leading assist man with four. Junior guard
Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) scored nine, all coming from behind-the-arc.
The men's basketball squad returns to the road on Wednesday, Jan. 28 as they travel to New York for a NE-10 road game versus Pace. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
