Men’s Basketball Defeated by Assumption, 68-54

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption on Saturday afternoon by the score of 68-54. The Owls are now 1-10 overall on the season and 0-7 in the NE-10. Assumption improved to 7-5 and 5-3 in the conference. The Owls were led by senior forward Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) with 13 points a piece.

The Owls controlled the tempo for most of the first half and out-rebounded the Greyhounds 23 to 10. However, a late rally by Assumption gave them the edge as they headed into halftime with a 30-19 lead.

In the second half, the Owls managed to cut the lead down to five after back-to-back lay-ups by freshman forward Kieran Ramsey (N. Hollywood, Calif.) and Mazzarella made the score 40-35. Assumption responded immediately with an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Owls.

Junior guard Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) tallied nine points and freshman guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y) added eight and two steals. Senior guard Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Mazzarella led the rebounding attack with eight each.

The Owls return to Moore Fieldhouse for their next contest against Northeast-10 opponent AIC. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
