Owls Rout New Haven, 54-26, To Claim Elm City Trophy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) completed 14-of-21 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, while the tandem of senior Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) and sophomore Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) combined for 239 yards as the Southern Connecticut State University football team rolled over the University of New Haven on Friday night, 54-26.

Southern Connecticut is now 4-2, 4-0 in Northeast-10 action. New Haven dropped to 2-3, 1-3.

The Owls took the opening kickoff and marched down the field on a seven play, 66-yard drive that culminated on a 6-yard pass from Roberts to Freeman. Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

New Haven tied the game on its next possession, but the Owls used a long return from Martin Manson (Bloomfield, Conn.) off the ensuing kickoff. On the first play of the drive, Roberts found Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) on a 32-yard pass to make it 14-7.

The Chargers scored with only three seconds in the first quarter to make it 14-13. However, the PAT was no good, and the Owls never trailed again the rest of the way.

Southern Connecticut scored twice in the second quarter to take a 28-13 lead into halftime. Freeman found the end zone from five yards out early in the quarter before John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) scored from one yard out midway through the frame.

New Haven scored only 3:15 into the third quarter to get within 28-19. However, the Owls got the ball right back and went 69 yards in five plays, ending with a 28-yard pass from Roberts to Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.).

Southern Connecticut actually scored 26 straight points in the final quarter. Leading 35-19 going into the last frame, Hazelton hit a 30-yard field goal to make it 38-19. An errant snap on a UNH punt resulted in a safety.

On the next drive, the Owls went 45 yards in eight plays. Freeman ended the drive with a six-yard touchdown run, his third touchdown on the night.

Slowley scored from one yard out later in the fourth quarter to end the Owls' scoring for the night. UNH added a touchdown with seven seconds left to make it 54-26.

Epps led the Owls' wideouts with five catches for 104 yards. Freeman had 111 yards on 20 carries, while Slowley had 128 yards on 16 carries.

Manson had two interceptions, while Jerome Pinckney (Ellenwood, Ga.) had a team-high 11 tackles to pace the defense.

The Owls are back in action on Friday, Oct. 9 for a road game at Bentley.
