Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) dropped 28 points in his Owls debut, however the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was defeated in its season opener to Felician College, 89-72. The Owls rallied in the second half but a halftime deficit of 16 was too much to overcome.

Early in the first half, the Owls trailed by 11 but three straight layups cut the deficit to five at the 13:08 mark. However, that would be the closest Southern would come to tying the game as they trailed 47-31 at halftime.

The second half was a different story as Southern scored 11 of the first 16 points in the first four and a half minutes of play. A jumper by freshman forward Ante Cosic (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) put the Owls down eight with 15:31 remaining.

Southern kept the game in reach for the next couple minutes but Felician went on a run of its own and pulled away, taking a 71-51 lead with 10:00 minutes to go.

In his first game as an Owl, Carberry recorded 28 points, going 8-for-10 from the floor and 10-for-15 from the charity stripe. He also dropped two from behind-the-arc and led the team defensively with three steals.

Sophomore guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) joined Carberry in double-digit points, adding 10 of his own. Junior forward Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) and graduate center Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded nine and seven points respectively in their season debuts and junior guard Lance Long (New Haven, Conn.) dished out four assists to round out the top offensive performers for the Owls.

Devon Young led all scorers with 31 and Kashiff Foster and Ethan Kennedy dropped 16 and 12 points respectively to lead Felician.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday as they head to Syracuse, N.Y. for a Northeast-10 contest against Le Moyne. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
