Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team scored in double figures, but the Owls fell short to the New York Institute of Technology, 82-70, at the University of Bridgeport on Friday evening. Freshman
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) led the way with 20 points and three rebounds in the team's third loss of the season.
The first half of action featured a very close battle between to two squads. The Bears carried the lead for much of the opening stanza, but their largest lead was only six points. As the first half whistle neared, the Owls managed to grasp a one point advantage with a jumper from
Johnnie Bird (Bridgeport, Conn.). After the first 20 minutes of play, the Bears controlled a 36-35 lead as the two teams headed into the locker rooms.
Following the brief intermission, the Bears continued to put pressure on the Owls' defense. NYIT opened a nine point advantage just seven minutes into the second period. Nonetheless, Southern countered with a 10-2 run of their own, capped off by a jumper from Carberry at the 9:33 mark.
Despite the comeback by the Owls, NYIT closed out the game on a 27-16 run for their second win of the season. Carl Kindborg finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-12 shooting and grabbed four rebounds leading the way for the Bears.
Carberry led the way for Southern with 20 points on 6-12 shooting and went 8-9 from the charity stripe.
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each chipped in with 11 points, while
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 10 points of his own.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow against Bridgeport. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
