WATERBURY, Conn. – Five members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team reached double digits, as the Owls remained undefeated with a 76-71 victory at Dubner Center on Saturday afternoon. Behind 18 points and five rebounds from senior
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.), the Owls improved to 3-0, 1-0 in Northeast-10 competition with the win.
The first half featured an action-packed, fast paced contest between the instate competitors. In the opening 20 minutes, the two teams combined for four lead changes and 12 tie scores. Southern garnered its largest lead of the first half (five points) after a lay-up from junior
LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.), but only carried a mere three point advantage into halftime.
Following the brief intermission, the Eagles' offense raced out of the locker rooms. Kendra Pitts capped off a 15-6 run with a lay-up 4:05 into the second half, granting Post its largest lead of the game at six points.
Despite the stagnant start, Smith and
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) ignited the Owls' offense midway through the period. The tandem combined for 22 second-half points, including two key three-pointers and knocked down 8-of-9 free-throws. Southern closed out the last 3:45 on an 11-7 run, solidifying a 76-71 victory.
Smith finished with a team-high 18 points, went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and hauled in five rebounds for the Owls. Hatcher finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while junior
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) added 10 points and six rebounds for a dominating effort in the post.
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) netted 12 points and dished out a game-high six assists, as Fiola chipped in with 11 points of her own.
The Owls return to action on Nov. 24 with a home contest against Pace University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Moore Field House.
