Buzzer Beater Sends Molloy Past Women’s Basketball, 57-56

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball registered a game-high in points and rebounds, however the Owls suffered a heartbreaking loss at the buzzer to Molloy College, 57-56, at Quealy Gymnasium on Monday night. The Lions scored with 0.2 seconds left in regulation, handing the Owls their first non-conference loss of the season.

With the result, Southern dropped to 7-3 on the season, while the Lions improved to 6-3 with the win.

After a very fast start early on in the opening stanza, both teams cooled off quickly midway through the half. In fact, the two squads combined for only 10 points in the last 12 minutes of play. Johannes led the Owls with eight points and nine rebounds, while Kymira Woodberry chimed in with eight points and seven boards for the Lions. At the break, Molloy carried a 28-21 lead into the locker rooms.

Following the intermission, Southern captured the lead 10 minutes into the season half with an 18-7 run. Senior Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) capped off the surge with a three-pointer from the corner, forcing a timeout from the hosting Lions.

The Owls continued to keep the pressure on in the half behind tremendous shooting from behind the arc. Southern knocked down 6-10 shots from downtown, including one from junior captain Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa) with 3:03 left putting the Owls in front 52-44.

However, the Lions connected on three three-point shots en route to an 11-4 run over the final three minutes, bringing Molloy to within one point with four seconds left in regulation. After a missed free-throw and a Southern foul, the Lions had one last chance with 0.2 seconds and the ball at mid court.

Jenna McLaughlin lofted the ball towards the basket where a soaring Woodberry caught and finished a shot from inside the paint for a thrilling victory in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

Johannes led the way with 15 points going 6-14 from the floor with 16 boards for the visiting Owls. Lentz posted a season-high 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists. Smith added 10 points and three rebounds, while LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) and Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) dropped eight and six points respectively.

The Owls return to action on Dec. 30 with a home game against Holy Family. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Moore Field House.
