MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Northeast-10 opponent Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday night by the score of 68-60. Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) and graduate forward Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 19 points each to lead the Owls.

Southern is now 1-9 overall and Southern New Hampshire improved to 6-4.

The Owls jumped out strong to begin regulation and grabbed their largest lead of the game at the 11:30 mark up 13. The offense was running smoothly early on as they continuously dropped the ball down low for easy lay-ups. Southern led the entire first half but the Penmen would go on a late run to cut the deficit to three at the half.

Chapman led all scorers at the break with 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting and Josh Morgan-Green dropped 15 points for the Penmen. Southern hit 45.5% from the floor and Southern New Hampshire went 52.2% as the Owls took a 35-32 lead heading into halftime.

The Penmen would grab their first lead of the game at the 18:13 mark in the second half but a three-pointer by Carberry four minutes later would put the Owls back up by two. Southern would then contain the lead for another eight minutes until foul trouble towards the end of regulation hurt their chances of winning. The Penmen would score 14 points from the foul line in the second half as they pulled away in the final minute to take the win.

Chapman notched a double-double in the loss with a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) added double-digit points as well with 11 and sophomore guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a team-high five assists.

Southern outshot their opponent 47.2% to 43.1% from the floor but the Penmen hit 13 more foul shots which proved to be the difference.

The Owls return to Moore Field House on December 30 for a non-conference game against Dowling. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
