Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Graduate forward Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a game winning lay-up with no time remaining as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Dowling in a non-conference showdown, 58-56. Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) dropped a game-high 23 points as the Owls improved to 2-9 overall. With the loss, the Golden Lions fall to 3-9.

The Owls grabbed an 11-9 lead at the 9:31 mark in the first twenty minutes of regulation and took that momentum into the locker room. They shot 50% from the floor and held the Golden Lions to just 29.6% shooting.

Carberry had the hot hand in the first half as he carried the squad with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting and 3-for-5 from downtown. Dowling as team had just 24 points as they trailed by seven at halftime.

Southern jumped out to its largest lead of the game within the first four minutes of the second half as they led by 13 with 16:19 remaining. However, Dowling went on 14-0 run in just over five minutes to take their first lead since the halfway point in the first half.

The Golden Lions remained on top as time continued to expire. With just 46 seconds left, Chapman hit a lay-up to regain a lead but it wouldn't last long as John Merchant returned to the line to hit two.

Two made free throws by junior forward Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) seconds later gave the Owls a one-point lead once again but Merchant would hit one-of-two from the line to tie the game at 56 a piece. After the second shot was no good, Southern grabbed the rebound with just six seconds to go. Sophomore guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the ball down the court and dished the ball to a streaking Chapman as he went straight up for an easy lay-up as the clock expired to give Southern a 58-56 win in the team's final contest of 2009.

Chapman and sophomore forward Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) joined Carberry in double-digits with 11 and 10 points respectively. Senior center John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and led the team with five assists.

The Owls return to action on Saturday to host cross-town rival New Haven. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. following the women's game.
