NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) registered a season-high 18 points on Wednesday night, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell short to Holy Family, 72-59, in Moore Field House. The Owls wrapped up non-conference play with a 2-2 record, dropping to 7-4 overall with the loss to the Tigers.
The high scoring offense of Holy Family heated up quickly in the opening stanza. Behind 47 percent shooting, the Tigers grasped a 15 point lead with six minutes left to play in the first half. The Owls battled back and closed out the half with a 10-4 run, trailing by nine as the halftime whistle sounded.
Catherine Carr led all scorers with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers. Junior
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) led the way for the Owls with seven points and two assists, while O'Dell tossed in eight points at the break.
After the intermission, Southern jumped out to a 13-4 run cutting their nine point deficit to just two points. However, Holy Family bounced back with a 20-7 run, behind the hot hand of Catherine Carr. The junior forward netted 14 second-half points on 6-11 shooting en route to the Tigers' ninth win in a row.
O'Dell poured in a team-high 18 points on 7-10 shooting (3-5 from behind the arc) and pulled down four rebounds for the Owls. Lentz scored nine points and dished out a team-high six assists, while
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) chimed in with eight points. Senior
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) finished 5-13 from the floor for 12 points and hauled in three rebounds in the Owls' first loss in Moore Field House this season.
The Owls return to action on Jan. 2 with a home game against their cross-town rival New Haven. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Moore Field House.
