Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team registered a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Owls defeated Saint Rose by the final score of 70-53 on Saturday afternoon in Moore Field House. Sophomore
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) led a prolific defense with five steals, which held the Golden Knights to just 15 points in the second half.
Despite surrendering a 48.5 field goal percentage and an 8-0 run to start off the game, the Owls managed to hang tough in the opening stanza. Johannes registered 10 points and six rebounds as Southern finished the first half on a 9-4 run, trailing 38-32 as the halftime whistle sounded.
After the break, a rejuvenated Owls' squad took the floor and immediately grasped control of the game. Southern broke out on a 29-7 run over the next 12:57 of play, capped off by a deep three-pointer from
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.). After a jumper from Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) and a free-throw by
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.), the Owls notched their largest lead of the game of 19 points with 4:45 left in regulation.
Southern's defense held the Golden Knights to 20.8 percent shooting and out-rebounded Saint Rose 23-15 in the second half. For the game, the Owls' defense forced 23 turnovers and recorded 13 steals en route to their sixth win of the season.
Johannes led all scorers with 20 points on 7-12 shooting and hauled in 13 rebounds for the Owls. Smith added 15 points of her own, coupled with five rebounds and four assists. Along with her five steals, Lentz chimed in with 10 points and seven assists, while
LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) poured in 10 points. O'Dell tossed in a career-high nine points and dished out two assists in the triumph.
The Owls return to action on Dec. 8 with an away game against Assumption. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
