WORCESTER, Mass. – Three members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball recorded double figures, but the Owls were defeated at Assumption by the final score of 77-65 at Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass on Tuesday night. With the loss, Southern dropped to 6-2, 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds improved to 7-1, 5-1 in league play.

The first half of action featured a close, physical match-up between the two squads. The Owls led most of the way but a late rally by the Greyhounds gave them a six-point lead heading into halftime, 35-29. Molly Griffiths led all scorers with nine points on 4-4 shooting for Assumption, while Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.), Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) each netted six points for the Owls.

After the intermission, the two teams exchanged baskets early on in the second half. However, Assumption's offense came to life in the 13th minute of play. The hosting Greyhounds sparked a 16-4 run over a span of 5:23, which left the Owls 17 points behind. Despite a late offensive burst, Southern's deficit was too much to overcome as the squad suffered its second loss of the season.

Johannes led all Owls with 18 points on 8-15 shooting, hauled seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Smith recorded 10 second-half points for a total of 16, while Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) poured in 12 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. Lentz added six points and a team-high four assists in the losing effort.

The Owls return to action on Dec. 12 with a home game against Dominican. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Moore Field House.
