St. Anselm Edges the Owls, 72-68

The Owls fell short to Saint Anselm on Wednesday night at Soutenburgh Gym.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team posted double-digit scoring outputs, however the Owls were edged out by Northeast-10 opponent Saint Anselm, 72-68 on Wednesday night. Southern is now 1-20 overall and 0-16 in the NE-10. The win for St. Anselm marks the second time they beat SCSU this season as they improve to 13-8 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

Despite trailing by 10 early on, the Owls went on an 18-0 run in a little over five minutes as they grabbed a 21-13 lead with 10:39 remaining in the first half. Southern led by as much as 10 behind a 13 point performance by junior Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.). The Owls shot 45.2% from the field (14-31) compared to their opponents 30.3% (10-33) as they headed into halftime with a 37-32 lead.

In the second half, the Owls maintained a lead for the first seven minutes until a three-point play by Hakeem Williams tied the game at 45-45. The momentum quickly shifted in the Hawks direction as they controlled the lead for the next 11 minutes of play.

With 2:34 remaining in the game, junior guard Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) completed his own three-point play as he tied the game at 64. The next two and a half minutes went back and forth until Greg Vetrano clinched the win by hitting two foul shots with six seconds remaining as the Hawks pulled away with a 72-68 win.

Corbett led the Owls with a team-high 15 points. Harris dropped 14 and senior forward Preston Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior guard Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) each scored 10. Freshman forward Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) was the leading rebounder for the Owls as he grabbed nine boards and tallied six points.

The Owls head to Syracuse, N.Y. for a road conference game against Le Moyne on Saturday, February 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ted Grant Court.
