BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team fell to the University of Bridgeport, 1-0, in its season opener on Friday evening at Knights Field. The lone goal in the 60th minute of action proved to be the difference as the Owls suffered their first loss of the 2009 campaign.
In the first half of play, Southern held a slight eight to five advantage in shots. Despite two shots on target from each club, after 45 minutes of action the score was knotted up at 0-0.
Just 15 minutes into the second half, LeRoux Lothian slipped a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) for a 1-0 Purple Knight lead. Southern fought vigorously for the equalizer, however could not find the back of the net, dropping its first game of the season.
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) made four saves in the losing effort for the Owls, while Joseph Ferrentino recorded five saves in the victory for Bridgeport.
The Owls are back in action on Aug. 30 with their home opener against Post University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
