NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshmen duo
Victor Hernandez (Rye Book, N.Y.) and
Yoni Feldman (Ramat-Gan, Israel) each notched a goal on Sunday afternoon, as the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team upended Post, 3-1, at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls evened up its record at 1-1, while the Eagles dropped to 0-1 to begin the season.
Just nine minutes into action, a series of passes from the Southern offense generated the game's first goal. Freshman
Seth Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) slipped a pretty through ball to Hernandez, who placed a shot into the bottom left corner for an early 1-0 advantage.
Southern continued to control much of the possession and 14 minutes later connected for its second goal. Feldman calmly collected the ball inside the 18-yard box, used some fancy footwork and blasted a shot past the diving Errol Reid for his first goal of the season. Despite a late first half scare, the Owls held onto their 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.
Late in the second half of play, the two teams exchanged a pair of own goals, resulting in a 3-1 final score. With the victory, Southern climbed back to the .500 mark and improved to 1-0 at Jess Dow Field.
Sophomore
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) collected two saves for his first victory of the year, while Errol Reid made one save in the losing effort.
The men's soccer team will return to action on Sept. 2, when the squad faces off against Northeast-10 Conference foe, Saint Anselm. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
