NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team suffered a distressing loss in double overtime to Northeast-10 Conference foe, Assumption on Wednesday evening at Jess Dow Field. The final score was 4-3. With the loss, the Owls snapped a four game winning streak and fell to 4-2, 1-1 in conference competition, while the Greyhounds improved to 5-1, 3-0 in the league.
Assumption's offense kicked off the action early on in the first half. Just 4:05 into play, Stephen Blaisdell capitalized on a mishap in the Southern backfield for a 1-0 Greyhound advantage.
The Greyhounds continued to pour on the pressure and generated their second goal 13 minutes later. Freshman Tom Carroll collected a pass from Blaisdell and buried a blast from the penalty spot for a 2-0 lead.
However, freshman
Yoni Feldman (Ramat-Gan, Israel) provided the spark that the Owls needed in the 30th minute of action. Feldman's crafty chip over the outstretched arms of the Greyhound goalkeeper found the far left side of the net, cutting the Southern deficit in half.
After the third Assumption goal by late first half substitution, Dom Mondi, sophomore
Cedric Panzu (Mons-En-Baroeul, France) netted his first goal of the season for the Owls. Panzu received a through ball from junior
Victor Hernandez (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and calmly slipped a shot past Brandon Sullivan just 1:37 before intermission. The Greyhounds held on to slim 3-2 lead at halftime.
From the sound of the second half whistle, the game rapidly became very physical. In the 59th minute, freshman
Yates Murphy (Belfast, Maine) notched the equalizer with his first mark of the year. Hernandez whipped in a cross from the left corner, as Murphy redirected the ball with his head into the bottom left corner of the net.
At the end of regulation, neither team could break the 3-3 deadlock, sending the two clubs into extra time.
In the 110th minute of play, Dom Mondi blasted a shot to the far left post that beat junior goalkeeper,
Chris Rybacki (Putnam, Conn.) for the game-winner. The 4-3 final was the Greyhounds fifth win in a row.
Rybacki posted three saves in his third start of the season, while Sullivan stopped two shots in the victory.
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 19 against Northeast-10 Conference opponent, Saint Michael's. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
